High School Gym Renovation
The next step in the High School Renovation will be the existing gym. The gym renovation will include replacing the gym floor, new bleachers, new windows, new doors, a new HVAC unit and painting the interior. Specifications for the project were made available to interested bidders in December and bids are due on Thursday, January 5th. A public hearing on the High School gym renovation project will be held on Wednesday, January 18th. Following the public hearing on January 18th, the Storm Lake Community School District Board of Education will consider bids and decide at that time whether or not to proceed with the project. If it is the Board’s desire to proceed with the project, work will occur during the summer of 2017 with a goal of completing the project before the start of school in August.
Early Childhood Facilities Meeting
The next meeting of the Early Childhood Facilities Committee will be on Thursday, January 26th at 7:00 PM in the Elementary Media Center. The focus of the meeting will be to review the committee’s previous discussions, to discuss the importance of communicating with Iowa Legislators about extending the sales tax sunset date and to discuss the next steps in the process. It would be great to have more representation from parents and community members at the meetings. If you are interested in early childhood education please plan to attend the meeting on Thursday, January 26th at 7:00 PM in the Elementary Media Center.
January Booster Club Meetings
The Storm Lake Community School District is fortunate to have two outstanding booster clubs that work hard to provide additional financial and personal support to students. The Music Boosters will be meeting on Monday, January 9th at 5:30 PM in the High School Band Room. Please contact Ty Seaman at the High School (732-8065) regarding the next meeting of the Athletic Boosters. Both booster clubs can always use more help. If you are interested in providing additional support to our students, please plan to attend a booster club meeting.
Congratulations to the Music Boosters and the many donors that contributed to auditorium piano purchase. It was announced in December that the Music Boosters had reach the goal of $140,000 to make the piano a reality for students.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day Activities - Monday, January 16
Students will be participating in service learning projects to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. birthday on Monday, January 16. The purpose of the Martin Luther King Day activities is to give students the opportunity to serve others. It is hoped that this experience will encourage students to develop a habit of service.
Iowa Assessments Begin the End of January
Elementary, Middle School and High School students will be participating in Iowa Assessments starting the last week of January. Please encourage your child to give their best effort on the Iowa Assessments.
New Academic Assessment Beginning in 2017
This school year will be the last time that school districts will use the Iowa Assessments as the annual measure of students’ academic proficiency. Beginning the 2017-2018 school year, Iowa Assessments will be replaced with a test called Smarter Balance. Smarter Balance was recommended by a Governor appointed task force and approved by the Iowa Legislature as the new measure of academic proficiency. To prepare parents and community members for the new assessment, Dr. Ryan Wise, Iowa Department of Education Director has prepared documents for school districts to share with parents. Two of the documents are included in this month’s newsletter – a one-page summary and a question and answer document. After you look this information over please let me know if you have questions. We will spend some time discussing the Smarter Balance assessment at our next School Improvement Advisory Committee meeting in March 2017.
Student Activities Calendar on the Website
If you are interested in attending student activities, please check our website for the dates and times of these activities. An activity calendar is on the bottom of the first page of the district’s website www.slcsd.org. Our students, directors, and coaches would really appreciate you attending their events.
We have had a great fall and maybe we will be lucky and not have to have any late starts, early outs, or cancellations the rest of the winter. If weather does become an issue, once again this winter I will post notifications on local radio stations KAYL/KKIA, KTIV Channel 4, and Iowa Alerts. Information on how to sign-up for Iowa Alerts is included on the website or you can contact the Central Office for this information. In addition, we will be using the school district’s website, Facebook page (www.facebook.com/slcsd), and Twitter account (StormLakeCSD) to post announcements.
I will do my very best to have a decision made by 6:15 AM. If I decide to have school and you disagree with my decision please call the school your child attends, tell them you disagree with my decision and it will be an excused absence.
I want to thank all the parents, students, community members, teachers and staff for a great first half of the school year. If you have ideas on how we can improve the education that we offer to our students please do not hesitate to call me (732-8060), email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) or stop in at 419 Lake Avenue.
