Connecting With Those Serving Overseas

Storm Lake Middle School students created holiday cards and notes to send to soldiers who were deployed overseas.  This was a service project as part of their daily SEL (Social Emotional Learning) class in December.  One recipient of the cards was SFC Melanie McCracken (currenlty deployed to Kuwait) who is the sister of Storm Lake Middle School teacher Valery Fuhrman.  McCracken thanked the students of SLMS by having a flag flown in their honor on March 4, 2021.  She then sent the flag and a plaque to the SLMS students in appreciation of their kindness.

The plaque states, "This American flag is dedicated to the Storm Lake Middle School, flown by B CO 2-104th GSAB "OUTCAST".

This flag was flown on a combat mission on the 4th of March, 2021 from Al Asad Airbase, Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve on a CH-47F Chinook helicopter.  It holds within it, the honor, patriotism and fidelity of every soldier that has served, including those that have paid the ultimate price for freedom.  It symbolizes the love of country and for fellow man which every soldier carries into combat, and the peace that surely awaits us all.
